Try Not to Breathe

Author: Jennifer Hubbard
Pages: 272
Publisher: Viking
Format: Hardcover
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary (from Goodreads)Ryan spends most of his time alone at the local waterfall because it’s the only thing that makes him feel alive. He’s sixteen, post-suicidal, and trying to figure out what to do with himself after a stint in a mental hospital. Then Nicki barges into his world, brimming with life and energy, and asking questions about Ryan’s depression that no one else has ever been brave enough—or cared enough—to ask. Ryan isn’t sure why he trusts Nicki with his darkest secrets, but that trust turns out to be the catalyst that he desperately needs to start living again.

My Summary: Ever since his failed suicide attempt and a stint at a psychiatric hospital, Ryan's been spending most of his time at the waterfall near his house. He can't seem to move forward - to keep himself from falling back into his old habits.

Until he meets Nicki. She talks to him like she's known him for years, asking questions that nobody else dares to. And when she asks him to help her uncover the truth about the secrets in her past, Ryan realizes just how big a job that may be.

My Thoughts: I've always been a fan of contemporary YA, and it's novels like this one that restore my faith in the genre.
Try Not to Breathe was an emotional, realistic novel about the repercussions of a suicide attempt and life after what was supposed to be 'the end'. I cherished every minute of it, and I loved getting to know Ryan and Nicki. The supporting characters were very well-written, and I liked the way the romance was done - it didn't seem forced, and it happened at (what I thought) was a really good time.

I also really liked the realism of the entire thing. Ryan and Nicki were not perfect, ideal people - far from it - and they were extremely easy to relate to. My heart ached for the guy as he struggled to deal with everything on his plate.

Final Thoughts: I definitely recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys contemporary YA and a little bit of romance.

  1. I know this book has been out for a while but I really want to read it! The summary sounds so kind of sad but totally intriguing! The only thing is: I wish the cover wasn't so kissy kissy lol! People in class start to question me and I have to explain to them that I'm not a pervert lol jk! Then parents start to wonder if they should give you "the talk". NO BUENO!!! hehe
