Summary (from Goodreads): When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created 'perfect' life is about to unravel before her eyes. She's forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for: her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect.

Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.

My Summary: Alex and Brittany live completely opposite lives. Alex lives on the south side of town - a place where gangs and violence rule - while Brittany lives on the north side, where the most heated argument is over who wore it best. But when the two are forced to be chemistry partners, they're both equally shocked to find they have... well, chemistry.

As the two get to know one another, they realize that even though they might come from completely different worlds, they may be playing the same parts in their own respective lives.

My Thoughts: It's so strange to think that I didn't even consider reading this book until a few weeks ago. I'd seen so many reviews raving about how great it was, and my automatic reaction was to be a little suspicious. I mean, it couldn't possibly be as great as everyone makes it out to be, right?

Wrong. I seriously can't believe it took my friend so long to convince me. Alex and Brittany were awesome characters, and I was pulled into their world (and hooked) almost immediately. I really enjoyed the banter between the characters, and the way the relationship developed realistically. And the ending... it was perfect!

Final Thoughts: I'm really happy I finally got around to reading this novel! I definitely recommend this to anyone who's a fan of contemporary lit and romance that's a little off the beaten path. I'm debating reading the sequels, so if anyone has already, I'll love to hear your thoughts!

  1. This whole series has been very popular with girls in my school for several years. Perhaps I should actually read it!
